BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Jeff Zehr and Tab Lardner notched two goals each and Rich Hansen tallied three assists as the Icehawks defeated the Bloomington PrairieThunder 6-2 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
The Icehawks power play unit proved to be the difference as they scored four of six goals on the power play. Prior to the game, Port Huron had recorded just one power play goal in their last six games.
Zehr scored his first power play goal of the night at 16:01 in the first period to give Port Huron an early advantage, but Bloomington’s Don Margettie landed a power play goal of his own with just one second left in the first period to tie the game.
Zehr and Lardner both notched power play goals in the second period to give Port Huron to a 3-1 lead as they entered the third. Bloomington added another goal early in the third stanza, but the Icehawks erupted for three goals in the final 18 minutes of play. The tallies included even strength goals from Mark DeSantis and Lardner and an unassisted power play goal from Josh Aspenlind.
The Icehawks outshot Bloomington 33-26 in the win. Port Huron has now outshot their opponent in their last five consecutive games.
Marty Magers turned away 24 of 26 shots between the pipes for Port Huron, while Bloomington’s Loic Lacasse made 27 saves in the loss.
With the win, the Icehawks pulled back into third place in the International Hockey League with a record of 22-21-0-1 and 45 points in the standings. The Muskegon Fury sit just one point behind at fourth place.
The Icehawks will look for another win against Bloomington tomorrow when they wrap up a back-to-back series with the Prairie Thunder.
